Spending on pets

The US spends more on our pets each year than the GNP of over half the countries in the world.  I think this is great - how we are evolving.  Dog chains are no longer cool.  Pet crimes are felonies. More vegans than ever. More humane treatment of farm animals. Better vet care.  Pets are like family.  After all, we chose to care for them. We bred them to BE dependent on us.

People take better care of themselves and their pets.  We are more in tune. I can see it in my lifetime.  And it is not just the US.  I have been to many countries and almost always pleasantly surprised how evolved they are in the treatment of animals.  We are all working together to outlaw seal beatings, whale killings, leg traps, the dog/cat/horse as food, spay/neuter, educate, help each other, tell on each other. Rewards for turning in illegal pet mills and dog fighting rings.

Circuses and Seaworld are no longer cool. Horse drawn carriages can be viewed as cruel. Dog chains outlawed in many cities. Proper food, water, shelter preached and observed by neighbors.  Rescues in full force with NO KILL POLICY. Bull fights are viewed as barbaric and we often root for the bull.

We take our pets with us everywhere, vacation, work, stores and restaurants.  We have dog parks in every city. They are in our family photos.  They now have hospice care and the best medical services (laser, gene therapy, MRI, etc). We have pet insurance, pet carriers, pet sitters, pet friendly motels and beaches, pet strollers, artificial limbs for pets, pet therapists, pet trainers, pet shows, pet stores, and dog bars.  We have all kinds of pet contests and shows, events, and gatherings. We love our pets and are more in tune. And that also means LOVE. We have allowed ourselves to get closer to animals. To FEEL.  I know I have grown so much over the years, learned so much and appreciate the animal world more than ever. Yes, spending money is equated to LOVE. Not how much we can make ON them but how to make their world a better place and in turn, we are better for it.
